The nameBimbofirst appears on a list of proposalsfounders drafted in 1943. It merited circling in competition with suggestions such asPan Rex, Pan NSE (“Nutritivo, Sabroso y Económico”), Sabrosoy, Pan Lirio, Pan NieveandPan Azteca.

Sometime later the foundersfound outthat in colloquial Italian, children (“bambini”) were also calledbimbo,aHungarian word that means “cocoon” or “bud.” Even more surprising is that in China, a phonemethat soundslike“bimbo” means bread.
